How actionable insights lead to sustainable impact

How actionable insights lead to sustainable impact

Decarbonisation isn’t a straight line — it’s a journey shaped by insight, clarity, and practical action. From understanding your starting point to measuring progress and reporting impact, these stories highlight how data becomes strategy — and strategy becomes real-world results.

Tyndall

How Tyndall exceeded net zero goals with a 98% gas reduction

Tyndall National Institute aimed to cut fossil fuel use without compromising performance. With OPNBuildings, they gained real-time insight to manage energy use and prioritise upgrades. By replacing gas boilers with heat pumps and tracking seven core indicators, they cut gas use by 98%—well ahead of their 2030 goal. Supported by SEAI EXEED, ISO 50001, and OPNBuildings’ platform, they now avoid 723 tonnes of CO₂ and save 3.6 GWh of energy each year.

making progress visible

Data that drives
accountability

Tyndall needed more than data—they needed visibility. By building a long-term monitoring system and tracking seven performance indicators, they moved from reactive management to proactive decision-making. This shift enabled deep emissions cuts and long-term efficiency—proving that the right tools make real progress possible.

Seeing what the site really needed

Tyndall used the platform to understand their true energy demand. They identified waste, reduced unnecessary loads, and built a clearer picture of how the campus behaved day to day. This moved them from assumptions to measured reality.

Measuring the impact of every change

With live data, they could see the effect of each action. They tracked performance in real conditions and understood where improvements held and where further work was needed. This visibility gave them confidence that progress was real.

Investing with clarity

Once Tyndall understood their actual energy requirement, they could decide which investments made sense. They focused resources on changes that delivered value. The platform gave them the certainty to invest based on evidence rather than estimates.

clarity drives action

With the right data, Tyndall didn’t just meet targets—they rewrote them.

AMS

How AMS is turning ambition into action

Aluminium extrusion is a heavy industrial process—high energy, high emissions, and historically hard to decarbonise. For AMS, a leading manufacturer in this space, the challenge wasn’t a lack of ambition. It was knowing where to begin.

With energy-intensive furnaces, volatile gas prices, and growing regulatory demands, the business needed a way to make its climate targets actionable. The existing systems weren’t built for that. What was missing was a clear line of sight—from ambition to impact.

turning ambition into action

Data that moves
with the business

In a sector as energy-intensive as aluminium extrusion, AMS needed more than static reports—they needed live, reliable insight. With OPN, they built a structured system that brings clarity across energy, process and emissions data. Legacy gaps were replaced with high-integrity metering, ISO-aligned tracking, and scenario planning. Solar and water systems are now monitored continuously—keeping AMS accountable and on track toward net-zero.

Seeing the full energy landscape

The sustainability planning features gave AMS a precise view of its energy behaviour. Leaders could see usage patterns in real time and could identify avoidable waste quickly. Allowing them to track the true impact of operational changes and investments.

Understanding gas use with precision

Turning to ENPIs and SEUs allowed AMS to look closely at gas use inside production, giving them a detailed view of where efficiency is gained or lost. This helped them reduce risk, strengthen planning, normalise energy performance against real operational activity and target efficiency where it mattered most.

One connected view of performance

Turning to ENPIs and SEUs — aligned with ISO 50001 — allowed AMS to focus on gas use within their core production processes and to see cause and effect. Leaders could spot trends, compare sites, and validate decisions with evidence. The clarity helped them stay ahead of rising energy and regulatory pressures.

PPG Shannon

How live insight helps PPG manage growth and complexity

When PPG and Universal Display Corporation launched a new OLED manufacturing facility in Shannon, they entered a fast-moving energy landscape. With three stakeholders involved—PPG, UDC Ireland, and OM2—and operations scaling rapidly, aligning everyone around performance wasn’t easy.

Static reports couldn’t keep up. PPG needed a shared, adaptable view of energy use that could evolve alongside the site.

TURNING COMPLEXITY INTO CLARITY

Live insight for a site
that never stands still

At PPG Shannon, nothing stays still—equipment changes, loads shift, and teams work in parallel. PPG needed a system that could grow with them. With OPN, they replaced outdated monitoring with live, validated data, expanded metering as the site scaled, and gave teams the visibility to take ownership. ISO 50001-aligned practices became part of daily routines, and clearer insight allowed them to refine targets and track real progress.

Seeing the site as it really behaved

PPG used live tracking to understand how each part of the site used energy. They moved from broad assumptions to specific insight. This helped them catch variation early and respond before it created cost or risk.

Building ownership across teams

Each team tracked its own SEUs. This shaped a culture of accountability. People understood the impact of their own decisions. They could also see how their area influenced the wider operation.

Using reliable data to guide growth

Live data helped PPG stay ahead of change. It supported decisions in a site that evolved week by week. It gave them confidence that growth and complexity could be managed without losing control of energy performance.

Dublin Airport Authority

Where assumptions needed real data

The daa entered the feasibility study with a firm belief about their heating and cooling requirements. Moving ahead on those assumptions could have locked them into millions of euros of investment for a system that might not deliver. The platform changed that. It showed where energy was actually needed and for what purpose. It revealed waste that could be reduced and separated genuine demand from inherited assumptions. This clarity gave daa a stronger footing for any future heat pump solution.

TURNING COMPLEXITY INTO CLARITY

Data that uncovered the real requirements

The first step was understanding the load. Monitoring revealed waste that had gone unnoticed and showed that the highest temperature need came from domestic hot water, not the wider heating system. Separating these demands allowed daa to meet hot-water needs with a smaller dedicated solution. The remaining heating system could then run at lower temperatures through the year, much closer to ideal heat pump conditions.

Uncovering waste, saving millions

The data made the true loads visible. It showed how each part of the system behaved and where energy was being used unnecessarily. This helped daa understand the gap between perceived requirements and measured reality.

Insights that change the course of action

Once the loads were broken out, daa could see the temperature ranges that actually mattered. This made it possible to match heat pump operation to real outdoor conditions and remove the inefficiencies created by running the system at one fixed high temperature.

A clearer path to the right solution

The fine-grain analysis showed that geothermal offered a lower peak electrical demand and a stronger annual efficiency profile. This aligned with daa’s criteria for success. These insights were only possible because the load data was accurate, detailed, and reliable.
